Balijup farm: family, people and nature working together

This large quenda, or southern brown bandicoot, in the Balijup Sanctuary has just been measured as part of citizen science monitoring and is being released. Quenda dig for their food, playing a vital role as ecosystem engineers. Photo: Basil Schur.

Balijup farm near Tenterden has long been a shining example of landcare in action. An enthusiastic collaboration between the Hordacre family and Green Skills is giving it an extra glow, especially now the quenda are back. Alan Hordacre and Basil Schur give a heart-warming account of family, people and nature working together in Gondwana Link’s latest Heartland Journeys’ story.

This story is also part of our monthly Heartland Journeys series in the Southerly Magazine (September 2023 edition), which is available online.
